A specific presentation situation arises when your presentation or conversation is recorded by the media and interpreted by a journalist. Not only is the situation particularly difficult and stressful:
- An interview with a (well known) journalist can be impressive.
- The setting: microphones, camera’s etc. in a television studio increases the stress level.
- A live transmission brings stress and tension to a summit.
- You have little or no time to think about what you are going to say.
- You have much less control over the conversation than in other situations.
- After the interview, the journalist or media can cut and interpret your words to convey a totally different message than the one you intended.
- Whatever you say will be broadcasted to a wide audience, so the stakes are very high.
- Because of the public nature of the media, your words are taken at face value which is not without risk.
This situation requires a specific approach. This training will include:
- working with media; what can you expect, knowing your rights
- preparation for an interview
- how to keep control of the interview
- recognize the pitfalls and the opportunities in an interview
- how to adjust your message according to the media and the audience
- minimizing the risk that your interview is used to send out the wrong messages
- building a relationship of trust and mutual respect with the journalist
and much more
